lyrics

I took off a runnin, when I saw you post your bail.
I wondered if you’d found forgiveness with the night you spent in jail.
I thought about you sleepin there, with the cold light on your hair
The cracked floor just a little damp, with your toes curled in the air
And I wondered if you thought of me, hiding scared inside your screams
Or if the worst of your night was there behind the dark West Texas street.

Your mother, she was angry every time I turned around.
She’d tip the scales of judgment and kill me with the sweetest sound.
And your father swung disappointment like he was trying to cut you down
That ax was mighty heavy, I trembled when it hit the ground.
And I wondered if they cried sometimes cause they’d let you run with me
Or if the worst of their life was there behind the dark West Texas street.

Well, I never will forget the day that you shaot your hate at me
You’d thrown some things along the way, just a message for me to see.
The night, it was fading dimmer and dark winds were roaming free
That house felt like and anchor, with black fear creeping onto me
And I asked the Lord to help me, to accept what I might be
The worst of my faith was left behind that dark west texas street.

Maybe I should of seen it, like the night come fallen down
Like the stars up in their heaven or the sun going round and round
But I thought your moon could light my day and the clouds were ‘neath the ground
And the blind would see the sun ahead and the deaf would hear your sound
And I wondered when I might lose hope and regret what I had dreamed
The last of that dream was left behind the dark west texas street.
